Spiritual Exploration

Our religious trauma group, Reclaiming Our Divine Spark, has been processing and letting go of old beliefs around “should,” shame, and guilt surrounding their spiritual identities.  It’s been hard and scary work to confront these beliefs and also beautiful to watch new resonant spiritual practices take root and grow.  The last couple sessions, I’ve brought an idea I borrowed from the Unitarian Universalist church called a loose leaf Bible.  In a nutshell, we’ve been exploring if we were the authors of our own collection of spiritual works and writings, what we might choose to include.  And oh my gosh, the beautiful, funny, and inspirational things that made our list have left a smile on my face a day later.  Everything from beautiful homemade ice cream, the Grand Canyon, Yeats poetry, a playlist of the best bangers, a handwritten note, to a perfectly cut grilled cheese made our list.

Our spiritual identities are so much bigger and brighter than fire and brimstone and limiting language and rules.  When we allow for a definition of spirituality that centers around awe, purpose, and the very experience of being a human, we unlock and open connection with our higher selves.  It’s here in this space you’ll find love, compassion, and a way towards a relationship with your whole body.

Today, I invite you to consider what you might include in your own spiritual anthology.  What art or artist calls to you?  What experiences have you had in your life that left you with awe and wonder?  What voices or experiences have awakened you or challenged you?  What songs would make their way onto your spiritual playlist?

Peace to you on your journey,

Cassie
